John Grimes BA, MA (ANU), Australian Service Medal, (Chairman): A successful business builder and entrepreneur, he has led the company through its rapid growth from concept to leadership in its field.

John previously co-founded Argus Solutions Ltd, a company specialising in iris recognition biometric technology.  Argus was a successful biometric specific company, and was known as a global product innovator.

John has extensive training and communication experience.  Most recently he has established himself as a media spokesman for the grey water industry.

John previously worked in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade following almost ten years with the Royal Australian Air Force.  

John gained formal ‘Train the Trainer’ accreditation while in the RAAF – and is regarded as a stimulating and informative presenter.

Paul Perkins AM, BBus, DipLGA, AMP (Harv), FCPA, FAICD. (Non-Executive Deputy Chairman appointed 15 December 2006): Adjunct Professor at the Australian National University, is a national leader in public sector utility reform and the emerging sustainable development movement.

He is presently:

  • Independent Chairman of the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Environmental Remediation (CRC CARE);
  • Member of the Australian Government’s Business Roundtable on Sustainable Development;
  • Chairman of the National Environmental Education Council; and
  • Chairman of the Barton Group, a national CEO alliance implementing the Environment Industry Development Action Agenda.

He was Project Director of the National Water Industry Development Roadmap study (May 2005) and provides occasional assistance and advice to governments on science-policy-operations integration with special emphasis on environmental and natural resource management, industry development initiatives and sustainability strategies.

He was CEO of ACTEW, a unique government-owned holding company which operates electricity, water, sewerage, gas and broadband telecommunications operations through ActewAGL, the first equity-based public-private partnership in multi-utility operations in Australia.

He has held senior board positions in more than a dozen companies and numerous government and industry boards, committees and taskforces. He is a past chairman of the Australian Water & Wastewater Association (ACT branch)(AWWA), Environment Business Australia (EBA), Environmental Management Export Corporation Ltd (AUSTEMEX).

He was appointed as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2005 for contributions to public sector reform, environment and export development.


Gerard Brennan LLB (Hons) Melb, LLM Lond, (General Counsel) has practiced as a Barrister or Solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria and in the United Kingdom.  He was appointed as the Legal Advisor to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade where he provided legal advice to Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Attorney-General, Cabinet, Department and other Ministers.

As well as being an Adjunct Professor at the University of Canberra School of Law, he has been active in a number of commercial ventures including as President of Clubs ACT.

Stephen Hardy BSc, BE, MBA, FIE Aust (Non-Executive Director) has 35 years of experience in development, project management, planning, administration and technical services within the property and construction industry.
This experience covers a broad range of complex and major projects in Australia, the USA and South East Asia.
He has been involved with almost all development projects undertaken by Hindmarsh. In 1988 he established a major international operation for the company, undertaking syndicated investment projects in the USA and guided Hindmarsh into design, development and project management of projects in Vietnam, Malaysia,and Myanmar. He is currently managing investments in various seed stage companies commercialising high technology research in the ACT region.

Mr Hardy  also overviews Hindmarsh Chinese activities which include:
  • a joint venture in carparking in Beijing;
  • a representative office in Shanghai which is investigating property investment opportunities in China;
  • importing a wide range of building materials from various areas of China.
